Rang de Basanti

After waiting for two long days, I finally went to watch 'Rang de Basanti' with friends.

The brilliant movie with a difference…. conveys a message that remains with you even after you leave the cinema hall. Arouses the feeling of patriotism, makes you think….but at the same time makes you laugh your heart out. All the characters are so well played. And the music…it’s simply amazing…the beats keep you rocking and the lyrics gel well with the theme.

But at the same time, arouses a lot of questions. Would their sacrifice make be able to make an iota of difference….will people actually take it forward ?

Just got remembered of a major issue that concerns the youth – reservations in government services, promotions etc. When V. P. Singh revised the tenure of reservations indefinitely, there was a lot of hungama. A couple of youngsters had set themselves on fire to protest this move. The issue was reported and discussed at all possible fronts. But the result ??

It still is just one of the favourite topics of debate in school-college competitions. In 2000, I participated in a Hindi Debate competition on this topic. I remember my closing lines, which fetched me the first prize..

Ho gayi hai peer parvat si, pighalni chahiye
Is himalya se koi ganga nikalni chahiye
Aur sirf hungama khada karna mera maksad nahi,
Meri koshish hai ki ye surat badalni chahiye.

(The menace has risen to its peak and its high time that we do something about it. My purpose is not to create a hue and cry, but my attempt is that the situation should change.)

But still, in 2006, the situation remains the same…not because its serving a great purpose…because the political parties keep gaining from it, because its their way to fetch the vote banks.

How exactly can we change the system then……is it not possible to be a part of the corrupt system and then try eating the corruption out like the white ants ? It might seem strange….but then being out of the system, we can’t change it and being part of the system and overtly opposing it just makes us a whistle blower and ends the story….so is not possible to get into the system, be part of a corruption to certain extent and attacking it big way.

Just pondering over these thoughts…

Sooner or later, we just accept the system as it is. I remember how much I used to wonder and get angry when my Nanaji would bribe the person from electricity or telephone dept. to get the disrupt services in place……but now, I possibly don’t mind itthat much….u see, for this movie itself, we purchased tickets in black.

How to set the limits….is taking small bribes justified but scams is what our eyebrows should really rise for??

All these questions remain in the thin air……

What’s your take on it ??
