Rang de Basanti

After waiting for two long days, I finally went to watch 'Rang de Basanti' with friends.

The brilliant movie with a difference…. conveys a message that remains with you even after you leave the cinema hall. Arouses the feeling of patriotism, makes you think….but at the same time makes you laugh your heart out. All the characters are so well played. And the music…it’s simply amazing…the beats keep you rocking and the lyrics gel well with the theme.

But at the same time, arouses a lot of questions. Would their sacrifice make be able to make an iota of difference….will people actually take it forward ?

Just got remembered of a major issue that concerns the youth – reservations in government services, promotions etc. When V. P. Singh revised the tenure of reservations indefinitely, there was a lot of hungama. A couple of youngsters had set themselves on fire to protest this move. The issue was reported and discussed at all possible fronts. But the result ??

It still is just one of the favourite topics of debate in school-college competitions. In 2000, I participated in a Hindi Debate competition on this topic. I remember my closing lines, which fetched me the first prize..

Ho gayi hai peer parvat si, pighalni chahiye
Is himalya se koi ganga nikalni chahiye
Aur sirf hungama khada karna mera maksad nahi,
Meri koshish hai ki ye surat badalni chahiye.

(The menace has risen to its peak and its high time that we do something about it. My purpose is not to create a hue and cry, but my attempt is that the situation should change.)

But still, in 2006, the situation remains the same…not because its serving a great purpose…because the political parties keep gaining from it, because its their way to fetch the vote banks.

How exactly can we change the system then……is it not possible to be a part of the corrupt system and then try eating the corruption out like the white ants ? It might seem strange….but then being out of the system, we can’t change it and being part of the system and overtly opposing it just makes us a whistle blower and ends the story….so is not possible to get into the system, be part of a corruption to certain extent and attacking it big way.

Just pondering over these thoughts…

Sooner or later, we just accept the system as it is. I remember how much I used to wonder and get angry when my Nanaji would bribe the person from electricity or telephone dept. to get the disrupt services in place……but now, I possibly don’t mind itthat much….u see, for this movie itself, we purchased tickets in black.

How to set the limits….is taking small bribes justified but scams is what our eyebrows should really rise for??

All these questions remain in the thin air……

What’s your take on it ??

Nice to see ur blog after so long :) I saw the Poll of TOI yesterday and around 75 % percent feels that corruption is the biggest menace india is facing today..As u rightly said, corruption has become so rampant nowadays that people has accepted it as a part and parcel of life..In the movie itself, we could see that initially everybody felt that nothing can be done ...
I know this is big problem and there is no easy solution to it.. but we cant keep quiet and let it happen.. we the young generation has to take the lead to curb this.. i am not subscribing to what the rang de basanti team did..i respect their sentiments and concern for the country.. but i have always been a follower of Gandhiji's ideology of truth and non violence.. i mean we got independence not becoz of violence but becoz of non-violence..
it is rightly said that " A smile can make everything straight" ..
what i mean to say is that we have take the another route..
i always pondered about how to fight corruption and have come up with some pointers that may help reduce it ..
First of all, education is a must and as one can see the most illiterate states like Bihar, UP are the most corrupted..I believe that knowledge is power and this power will make the people aware of their rights, what is right or wrong..
Secondly, media( the fourth estate) has to play a major role.. it is nice to see that it has been doing a commendable job and the unearthing of various scams is proof of it... my only request to the media persons is that dont select news only on the basis of TRP ratings it will fetch but as a responsible citizen of India...
Thirdly, technology has changed the look of the world .. and i feel technology can be used as a major weapon to curb corruption.. and i am happy that many people have done it like ITC e-choupal and many more.. Also the right to information bill has been passed in which technology is playing a major role..
Finally i believe that encouraging competition in the economy will help a great way..we can see it in the field of Telecom and many more..
I really liked the dialogues of the film which said " No country is perfect and it ours duty to make it better by enrolling ourselves in IAS, IPS, etc.." i am really going to play my role in doing my some bit and i believe that if everybody feels the same way and ready to do their some bit then we can really make a difference..I hope such movies will make the people realise the graveness of the situation and to forget the "chalta hai " attitude.
I can tell you that for the dream India 2020 of APJ Abdul kalam to realise , we really have to do sth about this demon....
I LOVE MY COUNTRY VERY MUCH AND I WILL DO MY BIT TO MAKE SURE THAT MY COUNTRY ACHIEVES THE DREAM.
Jai Hind!!!
